Injection Instructions
If you have been prescribed an injectable medication, this video will teach you how to perform a self-injection. Alternatively, you may have a friend or family member do the injection for you.
I recommend ordering your injection supplies through a medical supply website. For your injections you will need the following:
Subcutaneous injections:
1ml syringe
any length 22 gauge needle (for drawing up medication)
5/8” 25 gauge needle (for injection)
alcohol prep pads
bandaid (optional)
sharps container (you can also use a thick-walled plastic sports drink bottle)
Intramuscular injections:
1ml syringe
any length 22 gauge needle (for drawing up medication)
1” or 1.5” 25 gauge needle (for injection)
alcohol prep pads
bandaid (optional)
sharps container (you can also use a thick-walled plastic sports drink bottle)
For those with needle phobias, it may be helpful to use an auto-injector pen which conceals the needle from sight during the injection. There are options which work for subcutaneous only and others which work for either subcutaneous or intramuscular injections. Please notify me if you plan to use this device as it will require different syringes than usually supplied at the pharmacy.
There is also a device called the ShotBlocker which can decrease pain with the injection by increasing stimulus around the area. This is a non-invasive way to improve your injection experience.
